English
This term, in English, we are studying the following texts:
Old Bear by Jane Hissey Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin
Children will be writing narratives for both texts, as well as recount messages and instructions.
Terminology for pupils: letter, capital letter, word, sentence, plural, singular, full stop, question mark, exclamation mark, punctuation
Maths
We use Master the Curriculum for maths. Below you can see the small steps we will be learning in the Autumn term. Each small step usually represents one lesson. However, sometimes we may take a few extra lessons to learn and consolidate some of these maths skills.
Our maths focus areas this term are: Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Shape.
Essential Letters and Sounds (Phonics)
We continue our reading journey in year One through ELS Phonics. Below you can see the order in which we learn this throughout the Autumn term:
Science
In Science during the first half term we will be learning about seasonal changes, where we will learn to:
- Name the four seasons in order and describe the typical weather in each.
- Name some activities and events in the four seasons.
- Describe the appearance of a tree’s leaves in each season.
- Recall that summer has the most daylight hours and winter has the least daylight hours.
- Record data about the temperature across the four seasons.
- Label a map of the UK with capital cities and seasonal weather symbols.
- Complete a pictogram and use it to answer simple questions.
- Record data about the temperature across the four seasons
In Science during the second half term we will be learning about everyday materials, where we will learn to:
- Name objects and identify the materials they are made from.
- Recognise that objects are made from materials that suit their purpose.
- Recall that a property is how a material can be described.
- Sort objects based on the materials they are made from.
- Group objects based on their properties.
- Suggest ways to test materials for their properties.
- Make predictions and recognise whether they were accurate.
- Use their observations to answer questions.
- Begin to recognise if a test is fair
Computing
In computing this term we are learning about hardware, technology outside of school and online safety. We use Purple Mash to help us learn about computing. You will find your login details in the back of your reading diary. https://www.purplemash.com/
History/Geography
How am I making history?
In our Autumn 1 history topic we will learn to:
- Order three photographs correctly on a simple timeline.
- Use the terms ‘before’ and ‘after’ when discussing their timelines.
- Talk about three memories and place one of them on a timeline.
- Explain why memories are special and name four events that they celebrate throughout the year.
- Think of three ways they celebrate their birthday.
- Ask a visitor one question about childhood in the past.
- Know a similarity and a difference between childhood now and in the past.
- Add three ideas to a time capsule about themselves.
- Use key vocabulary to compare the present, the past and possible changes in the future.
What is it like here?
In our Autumn 2 geography topic we will learn to:
- Locate three features on an aerial photograph of the school and know the name of the country and village, town or city in which they live.
- Make a map of the classroom with four key features, using objects to represent the distance and direction of features in the classroom.
- Recognise four features in the school grounds using a map.
- Explain how they feel about three areas of the playground and find out how others feel by looking at the results of a survey.
- Draw a design to improve three areas of the playground using the results from the survey.
Art/DT
In DT we are learning about Mechanisms - making a moving story book . We will learn to:
- Identify whether a mechanism is a side-to-side slider or an up-and-down slider and determine what movement the mechanism will make.
- Clearly label drawings to show which parts of their design will move and in which direction.
- Make a picture, which meets the design criteria, with parts that move purposefully as planned.
- Evaluate the main strengths and weaknesses of their design and suggest alterations.
In Art we are mixing colours, using different materials to sketch simple objects and the work of artist Henri Rousseau.
Music
In Music we will be exploring duration and sounds this term.
PE
In PE this term we are learning the following:
Fundamentals:

We follow the Worcestershire Agreed Syllabus for RE.

In PSHE we are learning about:

Enhanced Curriculum
LOTC
Year 1 have learning outside the classroom for two hours every other Wednesday afternoon. Children need to bring in dark jogging bottoms and wellies for these weekly sessions.

Christmas Play - The children in Year 1 are a part of our Christmas play. We are performing for families on 9th December 2pm and 6pm, and 11th December 6pm. We hope you can join us!
Reading, Spellings & Times Tables at home
It is expected that parents will support their child’s learning through nightly reading and practising spelling words. Creative tasks may be set at points during the year that children can complete to support class topics or other whole school themes e.g. arts week or science week.
Expectations for homework
- Reading: Children will receive a reading book and a sharing book each week. Please encourage your child to read their reading book every day and log this into their reading diaries. Shared reading books should be read by an adult to their child.
- Spellings: children will receive weekly spellings. Please support your child in learning these.
- Whole School Challenges: Throughout the year there are a range of special challenges e.g. make a bird feeders related to whole school initiatives. These tasks are optional and are in addition to homework set by class teachers.
